When you see posts about Mondays and how people hate them, it almost always has a picture of our favourite fat orange cat Garfield. Yup, Garfield has been our sarcastic, funny, insulting and hilarious cat for ages now. But how did it start and where did he come from? Well today you will know all you need to know about this cat.
Jim Davis who grew up with 25 cats in his house and noticed that there are many comic strips about dogs but none about cats and thus Garfield was born. His bored with life attitude, love for food and one liners to his owner Jon Arbuckle had us in splits. Obviously we cannot forget about the loving Odie who kept us entertained along with Garfield also was a part of this hilarious strip. Every day we would run to the open the newspapers to get our daily dose of the fat cat.
Garfield today is not only a comic strip but 5 movies, 2 cartoon shows, a video game, a stage show, a comic book and an art book with just Garfield. And not to mention loads and loads of merchandise too amounting to 1 billion dollars in yearly sales. That’s one expensive cat!
But it’s not all the fancy hype around it, in fact the true genius of Garfield is in the witty one-liners and quirky responses to both Odie and Jon that keeps us coming back to this funny cat. We actually tried lasagne after Garfield made it popular and we have to admit we know why he loves it so much. Now it’s a regular affair for lunch.
Oh did we also mention it holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s most widely syndicated comic strip? Yup that’s true, apart from being an expensive cat he is also a record holder and we are very proud. Support your favourite fat cat by picking up some exclusive merch only on Voxpop.
