It has been a decade since the first game of Assassin’s Creed released but a shadow war between the champions of freedom and control fought by Earth’s greatest Assassins continues. The multimedia franchise includes at least 7 spinoffs, nine novels, 11 comics, a Michael Fassbender film, an in-development TV show, and unparalleled Pop culture merchandise. Origins’ creative director, Jean Guesdon, has been with the franchise almost since it began. Assassin’s Creed storyline in March was revolving around protagonist Desmond Miles reliving an ancestor’s genetic memories in an ultramodern lab is a refreshing change. At the same times the other style element that emerged become the hallmark of the series.
Expanding on the Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is a good opportunity to reflect on the series. It is an epic odyssey of a legendary Greek hero which let you decide on your path through the Golden Age of Ancient Greece. The writers and designers of the game enjoy artistic license with history, filling in the gaps in their own eccentricity. Set in 431 B.C., the game takes place during the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens. You have a pick of two: Alexios, a man, and Kassandra, a woman. Whoever you pick, their story plays out similarly in this an epic Greek tragedy. There is so much to explore in the world full of opportunities. Odyssey has full RPG element meaning that it is structured around player choices where they can create their own unique story through the relationships they build or hinder, with characters throughout the world – in turn playing a crucial part in the fate of Greece with their respective alliances. WARNING: In this reactive world, be careful which choices you make, as decisions may have consequences later in your experience.
It will shock you with its breadth and depth: the sea hides sunken ruins, the detail of temple paintings is impeccable, authentically clothed characters wander enormous cities whilst chatting in Greek, soldiers clash on roads as citizens scatter; encouraging you to pay attention to the dynamic Greece that Ubisoft has created. Naval combat returns in the Odyssey- you’ll be able to recruit a crew from the open world, your ship will be customizable, you can board other ships, and cleave enemy vessels in half.
The Spartan Kick is both hilarious and fun and you will be shouting “THIS IS SPARTA!” at the screen as you boot people off the edge of towers and cliffs. However, eventually, you’ll learn that the Ring of Chaos is actually a better version of Spartan Kick in almost every way.
Assassin’s Creed Odyssey doesn’t add anything that games-as-a-medium haven’t done before, but it’s been constructed carefully, passionately and skillfully.
